Thrifting….I wish!

Yesterday I posted a picture of the white sweater that I found at a local thrift shop for $2.50. I was/am pretty excited because that kind of find is RARE for me. I went thrifting locally last week and I came away with some thoughts—and a few finds.

I’m thinking that thrift shops are only as good as the area you live in. If you live in a bigger city where people tend to dress better and have more style, the thrifting will be better. Here, in little blue-collar Decatur, it’s kind of slim-pickings. I think that people take their nicer things to consignment stores (which is still good because I love those stores too!) That’s not to say that you can’t find wonderful things at the thrift stores. They are there, but not always and you are really, really going to have to hunt. There may be times that you walk away with nothing. That’s when you should look at the belts and accessories because you can almost ALWAYS find something for super-cheap that you could use!

So there is my local thrifting theory which is why the next time I’m in St. Louis to visit my sister, I am totally hitting Goodwill!

Just in case you are reading this and you are local, I got the sweater and a belt at Salvation Army in Fairview Plaza. I got a simple white button-up and a belt at DMH Thrift Shoppe. I also like LSA Resale. I have heard good things about thrifting in Champaign, so I’m hoping to get over there if and when the snow EVER melts!

I love to check out the thrift stores. I agree about the area you live in. We have a great Goodwill here and a few nice "resale" or "consignment" type shops. It's hit or miss though. If I had the time to go more frequently, I think I would have more luck! Have you ever been to Plato's Closet?

I never have time to thrift. I see the most amazing bargains that others find, but I never have their luck. I live in a rural town close to north Dallas (where the wealthier suburbs are) and my friends find great deals at Goodwills near there. I agree and think it's all about location. I think you found a winner in the sweater combined with the belt :)

I agree with you somewhat . . . is that okay? ; )

When I travel, I map out the local thrifts and consignment shops, and I always come home with something. I shop Goodwill So Cal mostly (home) and I find great things at all of the stores, but I have to admit my favs (thus far, I'm still exploring) are in West LA, Santa Monica, and Northridge. I have a closet filled with great labels, most of which are from Goodwill. Keep thrifting and remember to map out the stores when you travel.
